How to Avoid Common Mistakes in Web design

We have already covered several topics dealing with efficient websites. Today we’d like to focus on another aspect of a good website: proficient design. There are lots of tips on what makes a good website design, but we want to attract your attention to common web design mistakes and ways to avoid them.

1. First, don’t forget the key feature of any website – its purpose. Let the design make it clear immediately. In such a fast-paced environment as the internet people usually spend seconds visiting new websites in search of information or services. That’s why if your website design provides a distorted nature of your business, you are going to lose many potential customers. Your home or landing page must be ultimately clear as to the services you have to offer.

2. Second, avoid loud and conflicting color schemes. Usually, two or three colors are enough to evoke the mood of your company or business. Avoid too bright color themes since they are likely to distract your visitors from the very content of your website.

3. The website content, in its turn, should be readable. Don’t try to demonstrate your proficiency as a designer by using numerous fonts, sizes and animations. We suggest using one style of lettering which is easy on the eyes. Fancy fonts and blinking text should always be left out since very often they are illegible and confusing. A customer comes to your website not to decipher the text but to have the information immediately available. To achieve this try arranging the content in small paragraphs, use headings and subheadings, as well as bold type for relevant phrases. This will enable your visitors to scan pages of your website quickly and easily.

4. Make sure your website contains your privacy policy. It is a common mistake to spam clients via the contact information they’ve previously provided. You have to respect user privacy – explain how you are going to use your customer’s confidential information and ALWAYS give the option to unsubscribe at any time.
Being persistent is good for business, but being annoying is a disaster.

5. Website searching. People have already got used to searching engines that can find information on any topic within seconds. That’s why your website should also provide a search function. A web design mistake to avoid is not to provide a method to sort all the numerous pages that are powered by your website search. Think of different criteria – keywords, date, relevance – everything that is likely to make the searching a comfortable process.
